Daisy Quezada Ureña’s research-based practice is rooted in the social aspects of community. Her interest in ex-votos resides not in religion itself but rather in the people and places of religious practice. Quezada Ureña creates a link between the home and the sanctuary, where devotion functions as the main pillar of strength. Drawn to the materiality of ex-votos for tin’s associations with accessibility, resourcefulness, and shelter, Quezada Ureña considers the possibility of place as the object of devotion. Referencing tierra de azotea (roof dirt structures), she replaces traditional materials by embedding delicate and fragile porcelain into concrete, symbolizing a shelter that pays tribute to the female legacies of labor and the integrity of the domestic realm. In Cleotilde, Quezada Ureña honors her family’s history in construction as well as the role of matriarchs like her grandmother, in upholding the home as a safe place. Our Lady of Refuge, from the NMSU Permanent Art Collection, hangs beneath the awning representing the strength of women in maintaining communal refugios. The porcelain tiles were modeled using Quezada Ureña’s grandmother’s textiles.
La práctica basada en la investigación de Daisy Quezada Ureña tiene sus raíces en los aspectos sociales de la comunidad. Su interés por los exvotos no reside en la religión en sí misma, sino en las personas y lugares de práctica religiosa. Quezada Ureña crea un vínculo entre el hogar y el santuario, donde la devoción funciona como el principal pilar de fortaleza. Atraída por la materialidad de los exvotos por las asociaciones de hoja de metal, con la accesibilidad, el ingenio y el refugio, Quezada Ureña considera la posibilidad del lugar como objeto de devoción. Haciendo referencia a la tierra de azotea (estructuras de tierra del techo), reemplaza los materiales tradicionales al incrustar delicada y frágil porcelana en concreto, simbolizando un refugio que rinde homenaje a los legados femeninos del trabajo y la integridad del ámbito doméstico. En Cleotilde, Quezada Ureña honra la historia de su familia dentro del trabajo de construcción, así como el papel que matriarcas como su abuela, ejercen en el mantenimiento y la seguridad del hogar. Nuestra Señora del Refugio (Our Lady of Refuge), de la Colección de Arte Permanente de NMSU, colocada debajo de la marquesina, representa la fuerza de las mujeres en el mantenimiento de los refugios comunitarios. Los ladrillos de porcelana fueron moldeados usando los textiles de la abuela de Quezada Ureña.
